Description
This mural study was one of five designs our father submitted in 1938 for a PWAP competition for the Dallas, Texas Post Office. The painting portrays an imagined scene in the famous battle at the Alamo Mission in which a small number of Americans resisted but were overcome by much larger Mexican forces. All designs entered in the competition were exhibited at the Dallas Museum of Fine Art. Even though the mural commission was awarded to another artist, a critic declared: Finest painting of the entire group is that done by Frank Mechau, and execution of the design is nothing less than superlative. This artist thinks in terms of beauty and that is something. – The Mechau Family
