Though this striking painting is undated, we know that in 1940 Mechau wrote Kaj Klitgaard, a noted writer from the east, about his anticipated visit to Colorado to gather material for his forthcoming book, Through the American Landscape. The expected meeting of the two men fell through, but Mechau provided Klitgaard a colorful description of a unique geologic area of central Colorado, as if they were moving through it together:  We should have driven across South Park together, a vast beautiful undulating knolled plain buttoned by clumpy cedars, like the hills of Arezzo, placed in an ocean of ochres and ringed around with snow-capped mountain ranges.”  South Park inspired this painting with its ghost horses. – The Mechau Family
