Frank Mechau was not a literalist. In this 1936 painting, Horses Crossing Dunes, he brought together two distinct images — on the one hand, a group of wild horses he had seen near Mt. Sopris in Colorado and, on the other, sand dunes he had seen at Alamogordo, New Mexico to make, as he said, “a panel of architectural forms.” – The Mechau Family
