Description
Red Mountain endlessly fascinated Frank Mechau. Its rich color, structure, and setting are elements that so captured his fascination that he rendered it in drawings and three paintings, one of which is the dramatic Forest Fire, and in a lithograph. This painting presents the mountain as seen from a hillside above the Colorado River overlooking Glenwood Springs where he grew up. He framed it in a panorama that stretches from Mt. Sopris on the far left to the cliffs of Utah on the far right. He said of this painting, “My first landscape, and what a thriller for me.” — The Mechau family
