High western deserts contain some of the most extraordinary rock formations one can imagine. Our father was fascinated by them, and this particular drawing is a striking expression of this interest. An unusual feature of this work are the two horsemen: one evident in the foreground, the other a tiny, almost invisible distant horse and rider under the arches, seeming to escape. – The Mechau Family
